Free DNS, forever. For a better European internet

Max Heyer ·

In short: enum DNS is authoritative DNS hosting for the domains you own, free forever for every enum account. No fee per zone, no price per query, as many zones as you need. It runs on nameservers enum operates in the EU and supports DNSSEC, BIND zone file import and export, a CNAME at the zone apex, and TLS certificates through ACME DNS-01.

That is the deal with enum DNS. Host your zones on infrastructure we run in the EU, pay nothing for queries or zones, and keep that forever. We are building public cloud here on purpose: European operators, European nameservers, and DNS that does not nickel-and-dime you for every lookup.

Why it matters to us: DNS is the backbone of the internet, and it should not cost money per zone or per lookup. Moving your authoritative nameservers is also the cheapest first step towards European infrastructure, for a company or a side project. enum GmbH is a German company with no US parent, so the DNS that tells the world where your services live stays with a European operator.

enum DNS is generally available to every enum account. Registration is open and DNS is self-service. If you are already on the platform, you can use enum DNS now. If you are not, sign up and create your first zone right away.

What you get: zones, records, DNSSEC, import/export and certificates

Zones and records. Create a zone, point your registrar at the nameservers enum assigns your project, add records. Supported types are A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA. A CNAME is allowed at the zone apex, and enum serves the target’s addresses there.

BIND import and export. Move an existing zone in with a zone file, or export one out. Most providers can export a standard BIND zone file, so cutting over does not mean retyping records by hand, and a dry run shows you what the import will change before you apply it.

DNSSEC. Enable signing on an active zone and get the DS records (or the DNSKEY) to publish at your registrar.

Certificates. Issue TLS certificates, including wildcards, for domains you host on enum, with cert-manager and ACME DNS-01 validation.

Getting started

Create a zone:

enumctl dns zones create example.com

enum prints the nameservers for your project. They are named after European scientists, for example curie.ns.enum.cloud and planck.ns.enum.cloud. Set those nameservers at your registrar. The zone goes live once enum sees the delegation, and records you add before that are published the moment it does:

enumctl dns records create www.example.com A 203.0.113.10

Import an existing zone file, previewing the changes first:

enumctl dns zones import example.com --file example.com.zone --dry-run
enumctl dns zones import example.com --file example.com.zone

Enable DNSSEC when the zone is active:

enumctl dns zones enable-dnssec example.com

The same surface is available on the API. The full command reference is in the docs.

Free forever: no query or per-zone fees

enum DNS has no query pricing and no per-zone fee. Host as many zones as you need. That is not a launch promo: free forever is the product, for a better European internet.

What’s next

Anycast is on the roadmap, not live yet. When we launch our Anycast network, we will roll enum DNS out to all edge nodes so queries resolve from the PoP closest to the resolver. A Terraform provider is on the roadmap too. Until then, you manage zones and records with the enum API, its Go and TypeScript clients, or enumctl.
